THE DRIVE TO CORVALLIS from the Skagit Valley is about seven hours without traffic and with a few pit stops. Fran, my loyal golden lab mix, was in my rearview mirror. I hadn’t been planning to get a dog, as a transient graduate student and a perpetual renter, but Fran was part of an accidental litter of eight. On the farm where Jim worked, Henry’s son was going to breed Fran’s mom, a golden retriever, and sell the puppies to put money toward his school fund. However, a roaming English lab from the tulip farm down the road snuck into the garage, leaving evidence of his sinister act—muddy paw prints on a well-groomed, golden back. He had traipsed across the fields to do his dirty work and the result was a batch of over-the-top, adorable, roly-poly puppies.

Despite my intention to avoid seeing or playing with the pups, I ultimately became smitten with the smallest, yellowest ball in the bunch, and, as one by one they were sold off, I had to stake my claim. Now that I was in Oregon, in a new strange town, heartbroken, searching, and distraught, I looked at her in my rearview mirror and felt a deep sense of comfort from her loyal, unfailing smile. She was a true companion.

This long drive left me with a lot of time to think and process. After the scurry and rush of packing and moving, all I had to do was sit. Why was I so devastated?
